Ten years on one Manchester corner

Northern Bloom opened in a former print workshop on Whitworth Street West in 2016 with a second-hand chiller and a market van. We still buy at New Smithfield three mornings a week, still condition every stem overnight, and still answer the phone ourselves.

What has changed is the scale: we now look after around eighty weddings a year, a standing round of city-centre offices, and the quiet, careful sympathy work that matters most of all. We work without floral foam, wrap in compostable paper, and buy British whenever the season allows.

Sarah Mitchell

Head Florist

Sarah trained at the Manchester School of Floristry and spent nine years in Cheshire wedding studios before opening Northern Bloom in 2016. She leads all bridal and sympathy work, buys personally at market three mornings a week, and has a particular weakness for garden roses and anything scented.

James runs our same-day delivery operation and knows every one-way system between Castlefield and Ancoats. He coordinates funeral timings with local directors, manages our corporate maintenance rounds, and is the reason a 1pm order still reaches Didsbury before teatime.

How we work

Three things we will not compromise on

  • Foam-free, always

    Floral foam is a single-use microplastic. We build on chicken wire, moss and pin holders instead — it holds better and it does not end up in the Irwell.

  • Bought fresh, not boxed

    Three market mornings a week at New Smithfield, plus direct from British growers in Lincolnshire and Cornwall through the season. Nothing sits in a warehouse.

  • Honest about substitutions

    Flowers are a living crop. If a stem is not good enough on the day we swap it for something of equal or greater value, and we ring you first on weddings and funerals.

Parking, transport and access

Parking

  • Metered on-street bays directly outside on Whitworth Street West — free after 8pm and all day Sunday.
  • NCP Great Northern multi-storey is a four-minute walk (M3 4EN), with 12 accessible bays.
  • Two-minute loading bay outside the shop for collections — put your hazards on and we will bring the order out.

Public transport

  • Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop is 300m away, step-free from platform to pavement.
  • Deansgate rail station is a five-minute walk; Oxford Road station is ten minutes.
  • Bus routes 15, 41, 42 and 142 all stop on Oxford Street, three minutes away.

Wheelchair access

  • Step-free level entrance straight from the pavement — no lip, no ramp needed.
  • Doorway clear width of 900mm and a turning circle inside the shop for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
  • Accessible toilet available on request; assistance dogs are always welcome.
  • Large-print price lists and a portable card machine brought to you if standing is difficult.
